Gummy Bear Lab

                                   Gummy Bear Lab
Hypothesis: 
 *What do you think will happen to a gummy bear if you leave it in water overnight?
I think that the gummy bear's size will expand, because it is absorbing the water in the container.

Throughout day one the water was at 50 and the second day was 40. The third day stayed the same as day 2.

Questions 

1. Was your hypothesis correct?
    Yes, because my gummy bear did expand in size.

2. What change is greater - volume or mass?
    Volume, because the measurements changed.

3. Was there a change in density?
    Yes, the bear absorbed a lot of water. Therefore the bear got heavier.

4. How do your results compare to those of your classmates?
    My bear came out with a heavier mass and we all started with different sized gummy bears.

5. State the results of the day 2-3 salt water test.
    length- 2.2cm width- 1.3cm  thickness- 1cm  volume- 2.86cm3
density-.87

6. Look specifically at the volume. Explain changes based on your measurements.
    The changes would be that the volume is lower than the gummy bear in regular water, and not salt water.

7. How would you change the lab to test another variable? 
    I would have tried to leave it inside of alcohol, soda, and juice. Just to see what would have happened. I would have also put the gummy bear into a different temperature water (hot water).

8. The biological process used during this lab would be osmosis. Osmosis is being occurred because in osmosis a less concentrated solution is turned into a more concentrated one. The gummy bear lab is using osmosis because the gummy bear was in a much simpler form and a small size. After leaving the gummy bear into the water over night the bear turns into a bigger gummy bear. Osmosis is used especially in the size of the gummy bear. Not only size but the mass and the length. The gummy grew into a way bigger and heavier bear, than when it came from its original package.

Analysis Questions

1) The three indicators that determined chemical change was the color, size, and movement of the flames.

2) Something that is emitted when a chemical change takes place in the flame test is the color change.

3) The group of elements on the periodic table would be Alkali metal and Earth Alkali metals.

4) The only two elements that give the same spectrum of color would be Sodium Chloride and Potassium Chloride. They both gave off a yellow orange type of look.

5) The catalyst in the flame test experiment would be the heat, the flames.

6) One potential disadvantage would be the amount of time the color stays in the flame, so each person is forced to be alert. I would change the order in which we had to view the colors.





Critical Thinking 

In a crime scene the flame test can be useful because the flame test can be used to determine metal elements inside of water. Also, when the water is vaporized the metals and what is on the metals occur. Therefore, someones' fingerprints can show on the metal that is being studied at the moment, during the flame. Also, it can confirm which type of metal was used and it will help determine which weapon contains a certain element and lead to suspect of the crime.

Paper Chromatography

Pre-lab:
Lab objective: create a process for separating a mixture, specifically an ink mixture.

What colors are mixtures?

  • pink

What substances could be used to separate mixtures?

What is paper chromatography?
 Paper chromatography is the separating and identifying of mixtures that are colored. The image below is a picture of paper chromatography.

 

Separating the
Components of a Mixture
Most laboratory work in biology and chemistry requires the use of techniques to separate the components of mixtures.
Hypothesis Questions                                                                           1. Can green separate into its component colors? If yes, then which will separate out?                                                                                  Yes, it will change into its component colors. Those colors are yellow and blue.                                                                       

2. Can black separate into its component colors? If yes, then which colors will separate out?                                                                      Yes, black will change into its component colors because black
is a mixture of all colors.   

Materials

  • Green and black marker                                                         
  • Strips of Filter Papers    
  • Metric Ruler
  • Plastic Cup
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Tape
  • Pencil

Procedures



1.) Using the ruler, cut the filter paper into long, rectangular strips, about 3 cm x 10cm. *You need 2*

2.) Measure 0.5 cm from the bottom of the paper strip and draw a horizontal line with your pencil across the width of the strip. Then, use the black marker to make a dot on the pencil line.

3.) Tape the paper strip around the pencil so that the very bottom of the strip touches the alcohol.
**Do not let ink dot touch alcohol

4.) Pour rubbing alcohol into a plastic cup to a depth of ½ cm. Then, rest the pencil on the rim of the cup so that the end of the pencil strip with the ink mark is just barely in contact with the alcohol.


5.) Observe for about 8 minutes.


6.) Let the strip dry by taping it to a piece of paper provided.  Put group names, period, and ipod # on the sheet.


7.) Repeat the process for the other solution for the same marker.

Post Lab Questions:

1.) What did the results indicate about the black ink? *What classification of matter (mixture, substance) could you give the ink?

  • With the black ink in alcohol barely moved but in the water it went to the top of the filter paper very fast, the ink to me is a mixture because you can see all of the colors that make up black. (every color)

2.) What does the Rf value tell you about the solubility of a separated component (black ink) in the mobile phase solvent?
  • It shows me that it would most likely go up at a faster rate, than the mixture
3.) Which mobile phase solvent worked best in the chromatography experiment?
  • Capillary Action
4.) If you could alter the experiment to test another condition or factor, what would you change or test?
  • I would change the type of dye I used, to see what the difference would be.
Post Lab
How does paper chromatography work? What do the results tell us?
  • Paper chromatography works because of the solubility of the substance or mixture, and using capillary action.
  • The results tell us that without capillary action and solubility of something chromatography would not work.

Britney Montalvo 5 egg drop

                                                 Egg Drop Lab Report

Data 
The mass of the structure without the egg was 120g
The score calculation 2000/120g
The number of points we received total was 73 points
The mass of the structure with the egg was... 2000/136.5=14.6x5=73

  Results
Test #1                                                             

The height of the first test drop was 15 feet. 
It hit the ceiling and the egg did not break!

Test #2                                                              

The height of the second test was about 20 
feet. The egg was thrown down the stairs, it 
did not break at all.

                                                      Post lab questions


1) My final design would be a pine sol bottle cut in half, and wrapped with a t-shirt sleeve. Inside of the  bottle contains the following materials:
        A) medical gauzes (15-20 will be placed into the bottom of the bottle),  
B) a peice of an egg carton (just one piece to hold the egg  in place),
C) rubberbands (to close the egg carton closed tight),
D)T-shirt sleeves (to wrap the egg tight and cover the bottle).  

           2) The design was modified from my initial hypothesis by my partner and I. Together we had a completely different structure; that structure would have been to heavy. My initial idea was a tissue box to keep the egg cushioned and safe. However, the bottle was a great idea, because it was not heavy and it kept the egg in place. The first structure was way too extreme, so we modified it into something smaller and more likely to keep the egg from breaking.

3) The purpose of having multiple test drops would be to see if our structure would work or not. If we did not test our structure we would not have known if our egg would break or not. Therefore, it was important to test our structure.

4)My structure did not protect my egg, my egg broke. I believe that the problem was that we wrapped the egg too tight, and it did not have enough support or cushion to keep it from breaking. The weird part is that our structure was tested in many ways, and thrown the same way the teacher threw it.

5) If I could change my design, I would change the way the materials were placed, and I would definitely have added more cushion to the bottle and all around the egg for more support. I would also change
